This site was created and is maintained by Paulette Steeves, PhD. I am an Indigenous (Cree-Metis) Archaeologist and academic and my research is focused on Pleistocene archaeology sites of the Western Hemisphere. The past has power in the present and thus I also address colonization and decolonization in my research and writing. There is a human cost to erasure and denial of the Indigenous past, and thus also a much needed telling, a public testimony, an acknowledgement of such erasures, their human cost, and the place of new knowledge production on an ancient past in the contemporary lives of Indigneus people.

Professional Experience:
2010-2011 Denver Museum of Nature and Science Native American Archaeology Internship.
This internship included 10 weeks (each summer 2010/2011) of paleontology and archaeology field work at sites in the Great Plains of the USA. During this internship I worked with Dr. Steve. Holen, the head archaeology curator at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, as a member of the, Early Humans in the Americas Project. This field work included surveying known Pleistocene faunal fossil site areas, and collecting paleontological fossil materials at future research site areas.
2003-2008 Cultural Resource Management, Archaeologist.
This experience included mid-level management as a field director and crew chief, and the opportunity to be involved in report writing, and literature research. I carried out archaeological survey and excavations in many areas of the USA including: Nevada, Utah, Idaho, California, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, New York State, North Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, and New Brunswick, Canada.
2000-2003 University of Miami Medical School Ortho Rehab, Tissue Bank, Miami, Florida, Clinical Research Technician.
This position included three years of hands on experience in human osteology, and procurement and preparation of human bone for transplant. The responsibilities and training included assisting the Miami Coroner as an autopsy technician as well as training and certification in sterile processing. In this position I was also a research manager and clinical lab manager for the human cell growth research lab. This research included testing of products and materials for growth and preservation of human cells. I also designed and carried out the research to establish successful viable protocols for the effective cryopreservation and long term storage of human cells and transplant materials.
1998-2000 Quapaw NAGPRA Program, Fayetteville, Arkansas Native America Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Internship.
My responsibilities in this position included literature research, osteological collection reviews, and monitoring NAGPRA notice of claim filings. I also coordinated a project for molecular (genetics) research and DNA typing of Quapaw samples at the request of the Quapaw NAGPRA coordinator. This internship allowed me the opportunity to be a part of creating positive
cross cultural communications and consultations between Native American communities, academic institutions, cultural resource professionals and other governmental departments.
